More than thousand years ago the Roman Empire created a military camp under the name Vindobona in the area, which is now covered by Vienna’s city centre. At that time another military camp very close Vindobona was far bigger. But in the end Carnuntum lost its importance whereas Vienna grew into one of Europes biggest cities in the 19th century. Since World War I, Vienna has been the capital of the Republic of Austria.
What are the most interesting sights in Vienna? Tourists usually like to visit the imperial palaces of the Hofburg and Schönbrunn. Schloss Schönbrunn also accommodates the world’s oldest zoo, Tiergarten Schönbrunn. Especially kids like to have a drive with the ferry wheel “Riesenrad” in the Prater. Also the famous jazz pianist Joe Zawinul was born in Vienna and grew up in that town in the third district, Erdberg.
